THREE lime trees were planted last week in St Eustachius churchyard, Tavistock, to replace the ones which were felled last year. The new semi-mature trees replace the common limes which were reduced to stumps after reports they were not safe to retain. Tavistock Town Council is responsible for some 1,200 mature trees in and around the town. The council regularly commission tree surveys by experts who advise on what work needs to be done to keep the trees healthy and safe. According to the 2006 survey, the old trees had multiple wounds from previous pollarding, and there were dead limbs overhanging the footpaths and roads, so immediate felling was recommended. The two limes trees in Abbey Chapel churchyard, which also had to be felled, were not replaced due to the possibility of damage to architectural remains just below the surface.
