SO, here we go again. At the meeting about parking with West Devon Borough Council last year I asked: ?what happens next year and the year after? and at the end of the meeting someone said: ?Let?s hope we will not be discussing this again next year?. Some hope! Not only has the council shown a complete disregard for the views of the people who attended that meeting and all who live, work and shop in Tavistock ? whom they are supposed to represent ? but they are adding insult to injury by asking us to believe that they have been forced to put up charges because their machines cannot handle 5ps! I use the Tavistock Somerfield car park several times a week and the machines are rarely out of action. Even if there was some justification, why not show us that they are not out to fleece the motorist on every occasion and reduce it back to 80p? No, this is just another moneymaking scheme that makes Tavistock one of the most expensive places to park in Devon or Cornwall. As for next year, as we cannot have 5p increases, will it be £1 an hour? If they want to drive visitors and shoppers away from the town they are going the right way about it. Paul Mercer Ivy Cottage Peter Tavy THE increase in parking charges without doubt, a rip off for this town! Firstly, if the 5ps are causing a problem then could not the charges have been reduced by 5p? Secondly machines have always taken 5p pieces and I suspect will have to continue to do so. Thirdly, this is now a heaven sent excuse for saying that people never have the right change so we will put it up to £1. Many people will probably cease shopping in town. The only good that might come of it is that some of us will walk more. How about some imagination from the officials and implement some excellent suggestions that were mooted at a meeting last March by members of the public and traders.
