CHERITON Bishop Village Hall will host its first Villages in Action event next week with a wonderful evening of entertainment from Tom and Barbara Brown with ?This Farming Life?. Drawing on a lifetime love of traditional music, Devon-based performers Tom and Barbara present an evening of archive film footage, in black and white and in colour, silent and sound, with music and song. In a richly textured tapestry of song, spoken word, film, and music, the show is a homage to the farming traditions of the West Country and uses material from the South West Film and Television Archive, based in Plymouth. Some of the footage is from the 1920s, while some of the songs are modern such as ?Bampton Fair? composed by Paul Wilson, of Okehampton-based Wren Music. Tom and Barbara?s superb singing voices are accompanied by Tom on concertina, guitar, melodeon and mandola. The event takes place on Friday, October 6, at 7pm. A ploughman?s supper is included and there will be a bar. Tickets are available from Sarah O?Neill on 01647 24369. If anyone would like to arrange a similar event in their village they should contact Villages in Action 01363 773660 or e-mail [email protected]">[email protected] l He looks remarkably like a young Frank Sinatra and he even sings like him ? performer Jo King brings a touch of Las Vegas to Devon next month with the ?Frankly Sinatra? show. On Thursday, October 12, Bow Village Hall hosts the tribute to a musical icon, as part of the Villages in Action initiative. Jo King creates an intimate atmosphere, allowing the laid back humour and charismatic charm of the man to shine through. His repertoire is taken from Frank?s swinging heyday, the 1950s and early 1960s, including standards such as New York, New York, The Lady is a Tramp, In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning and You Make Me Feel So Young. The performance in Bow is part of a three-date tour of Devon venues, supported by Villages in Action. Tickets are £5.50/£4 (concession) and are available from Caroline on 01363 82950.
