A FUN day designed to raise funds for the West Devon-based response unit Rapid UK has raised an impressive £1,000-plus.
The Rapid UK Fair took place on Saturday.
Co-ordinator Geraldine Jury said the atmosphere at the event —which was held at the Fox and Hounds, Bridestowe courtesy of the landlord and landlady Frank and Sue Ward — was 'absolutely fabulous'.
'The fair was opened by Carlton TV personality Alexis Bowater who also started the races,' she said.
One of the most entertaining events was the Sheep Grand National which was organised by Brian Lavis.
The sheep, however, having minds of their own, didn't obey the rules and the first race had to be abandoned amidst much hilarity from the onlookers.
Other entertainment included stalls, football, a cowpat competition — without a cow! — and various games and displays. Barry Scisson brought his rescue dog 'Wilfred' along and put the Jack Ruessell terrier through his paces in finding a 'missing person'.
There was a disco in the evening and the event concluded with a spectacular firework display.
Geraldine said plans were already underway for a similar event next year as well as booking the popular Singing Farmer from Norfolk for a concert in Okehampton.
She praised all the help people had given to ensure last Saturday's event was such a success.
