A EUROPEAN computer driving licence course is one of a variety of new courses available at Tavistock Computer Training at the Alexander Centre — which re-opens on Monday after a complete refurbishment.
The latest specification personal computers, new printers, scanners and a webcam/digital camera have been installed, together with new desks. Manager Alison Sampson said she was 'delighted' with the new equipment.
'There will be fast Internet access and e-mail facilities for all computers simultaneously, with each student having his or her own e-mail address,' Alison said.
There are several new courses, including web page design and computerised accounts, in addition to the traditional ones.
There is no obligation to take exams unless the student is claiming a work-related benefit which would be eligible for fee concessions.
Alison, assisted by one member of staff, has a 'very supportive' band of volunteers, many gaining teaching experience before applying for paid posts.
'I am always keen to hear from anyone who would like to consider volunteering. The only qualifications are a basic knowledge of today's computers and software and a willingness to pass on that knowledge to others,' Alison said.
Alison is a keen supporter of lifelong learning.
'If I can do it, everyone else can,' she said. 'The more you exercise the fitter you become, and that includes those little grey cells as well as any other muscles!'
Tavistock Computer Training is open Monday to Friday including two late evenings until 9pm and offers courses from beginners to advanced level 3.
