South West Peninsula League Division One East

Okehampton Argyle 3

Sidmouth Town 2

OKEHAMPTON took all three points with a last minute penalty in this hotly contested game. Sidmouth must have been disappointed not to get a share of the spoils when there was so little to choose between the two sides throughout the 90 minutes, but all credit to Argyle for their never say die attitude, which sees them remain in second position in the table.

The first half was a very even affair and very exciting for the spectators as play swung from end to end.

The Okes lacked accuracy in their passing, normally a strength in their game, and there were rather a lot of hopeful balls played long that did not reach one of their own players.

The Okes were caught on the hop after 43 minutes by a quick and skilful Sidmouth counter-attack.

Luke Kirby dropped a perfectly flighted pass in at the near post for Sidmouth's prolific scorer Andrew Thomson to fire past Harry Geering from five yards.

Argyle needed a reply quickly and it was to come within a minute. Luke Alden made ground on the left and the ball broke loose to Steve Madge on the right side of the box.

He quickly played it through to Adam Mortimer who scrambled the ball home from close in.

After the break, Okehampton began to play better football and on 77 minutes deservedly took the lead when substitute Steve Kinsey's corner was headed home by Matt Mortimer.

On 88 minutes, it was all square again as Thomas Perryman made ground on the right and fired in perfect cross which Andrew Thomson despatched into the net with a bullet header.

The Okehampton faithful were just reconciling themselves to a draw when a superb move down the right saw them snatch victory in the last minute.

A right wing cross was beautifully headed over the Sidmouth keeper by Will Hawking to give Steve Kinsey a free header into the net.

The goal was prevented by the hand of a Sidmouth defender resulting in a penalty to the Okes and a red card for the defender. Matt Mortimer showed tremendous composure to blast home the spot kick for a tremendous win.

This was another hard working performance from the whole squad, but man of the match must go to Matt Mortimer for a strong defensive display along with two goals to his credit.
