ON May 14, the refuse collection day for this group of eight houses just off Golf Links Road was changed from Tuesday to Friday, and overnight what had been an excellent service became abysmal.

Almost every week since then one or other, and sometimes both, of the collections has failed, and despite countless emails and phone calls West Devon Council seem quite powerless to restore even an adequate service. They have introduced weekly checks, and a financial penalty, but all in vain.

It was only when we enquired this week why we were being singled out for this appalling service that they admitted there were 'a few problems around the area' which they were 'trying to resolve'.

It would be interesting to learn just how widespread these failures are.
