EASTER weekend proved to be very popular for the people of Okehampton, when Dartmoor Railway re-opened the line for visitors to experience trips from the town's station to Meldon quarry.

The service ran all weekend — from Good Friday to Bank Holiday Monday — and more than 500 people turned up to enjoy the event.

Dartmoor Railway welcomed local residents and holiday visitors to browse the model shop display on the platform, enjoy a buffet and experience the train ride.

Graham Isom, the general manager of Dartmoor Railway, said: 'It was a fantastic turn out and a great way to test how many people would be interested in the railway re-opening for a service from Okehampton to Exeter.

'I was over the moon with the amount of people who showed their support and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the long weekend.

'There were lots of locals as well as visitors and we were still welcoming people at 5pm, feeding them cups of tea and cake.

'It was a great laugh and lots of fun was had by all. The main point is, people would definitely be interested in having the service up and running to Exeter and that is fantastic.'
