CONDITIONS were excellent on Saturday at Okehampton Golf Club for the Professionals' Day and the entry attracted a full start sheet. With each player receiving a courtesy sleeve of golf balls, the aim of the day was enjoyment which was achieved in the camaraderie of this friendly golf club. However the competition was still keen and the scoring close and emphasising the good conditions. Evan Rees and Lee Pengelly won division one with 48 points, second were Andy Kirby and his son Ollie Kirby, 47pts. The next three places had to be decided on the back nine and back three as they all scored 45 pts. Third were Phil Atherton and Steve Rice. Division two was won by Ray Grey and lan Hough on 48pts, second were Harry and Phil Hawking on 47pts and third Dan Curtis and Will Searle on 45. The club ladies have had a busy time this week. On Monday Kath Mansell and Kay King went to Honiton to play Jane Easterbrook and Jean Barrell in the Devon County lady veterans' fourball knockout competition. Kath and Kay had won the qualifying round at Okehampton and so progressed to the first knockout stage, which they won 3-1 after a really close match. Tuesday saw the league team playing away at Teignmouth, where they managed two wins giving them a valuable six points. On Wednesday six of the ladies went to Honiton to play in their three ball team open. Kay King, Kath Mansell and Amanda Windsor won the 10 hole afternoon competition and were second with 77pts in the main competition. Penny Deakin, Doris Jewell and Cherry James were in sixth place with 74. The ladies' Wednesday competition was a three clubs and a putter Stableford. Eileen Piper won with 33 pts, second was Lorna Evans 32 and third was Mary Keir 31. On Friday the ladies' presidents' team went to East Devon where they lost 4-3. This was a good result and exactly reversed the home match, so no points lost. The winning ladies were Marcia Jones 4-3, Lin Atkinson 1up and Kath Mansell who had an excellent 5-3 win.
