MARINE litter and improving access to the water for the less able are just a few of the issues to be tackled in the new Tamar Estuaries Management Plan launched for public consultation this week.

The plan will be the framework for the forum's continued drive to address the key issues affecting the estuaries.

The forum aims to maintain the complex balance between social, economic and environmental interests in the Tamar estuaries which cover an area stretching from Gunnislake to the Rame Peninsula.

As a result of the 1997 plan, over £1-million was secured and spent in the local economy, providing employment and delivering projects such as the upper Tamar passenger ferry, the new landing stage at Calstock and the waterfront walkway through Plymouth.

Some of the main issues raised in the new plan which is the revision of the 1997 plan, include:

l promoting safety at sea and on the shore

l continuing to drive down crime and vandalism and improve policing in the estuary area

l seeking to regenerate and enhance waterside area

l encouraging a diverse and prosperous marine related industrial base around the estuary basin.

An exhibition featuring the plan will be displayed locally in the library at Callington Community College between October 2-9 and at Tavistock Library between October 9-19.
