TWO Tavistock children have been celebrating, after scooping top grades in language GCSEs ? at the ages of just 12 and 14. Tavistock College year 7 student Kitty Austin received an A* for her Spanish GCSE, while her elder brother Jess, who is in year 9, attained an A grade. Their proud father John said he and wife Julie were amazed when their children obtained such good results at such a young age: ?We were quite shocked really. We thought they might get a C or a B or something, so we were quite gobsmacked their grades were that good. ?I know they did have an edge because we lived in Spain for a while, but this is wonderful.? John said the family came to Tavistock about 20 months ago, after living in a mountain village in Andalucia for almost three years. They returned to England for the sake of the children?s education. ?Our only criteria when we moved back was anywhere but London,? said John. ?We have both visited the West Country ? Julie did a search on the internet and we realised Tavistock College was a language college, so we came here.? John said Kitty, who was actually last year?s carnival queen, and Jess love school in Tavistock and the family have settled really well ? apart from the rain! Kitty now intends to study for her AS level in Spanish this year, with a view to taking her full A-level in year 9. Jess is about to embark on a full course of GCSEs this year ? he will take A-level early, if his work commitments permit. * It means ?Young stars of Spanish? . . . but the Times sub-editor cheated by using a translation website . . .
