Abbigail Turner, aged 12, began diving when she was six years old with Plymouth Diving. Just a year later she won her first gold medal at Crystal Palace and has since notched up 17 medals in regional and national competitions. Last year she was the district age group champion.
Her £100 cheque from Fulfords will go towards her travel, coaching and accommodation costs. The grant was arranged through the SportsAid South West charity, which works to help talented young sportspersons compete at the highest levels in their chosen sports.
Geoff Waller, area fundraiser for SportsAid, said: 'There are many local youngsters like Abbigail who have talent and potential to make it to the top of their sport, but who all too often face considerable financial burden, a cost that their families simply cannot afford.'
Abbigail was identified as a worthy recipient by the Western Counties Amateur Swimming Association.
Jackie Morgan, manager at Fulfords in Tavistock, said the company was pleased to be able to help Abbigail, particularly as she is a local sporting talent.
SportsAid South West arranges awards to competitors aged 11 to 19 who are currently expected to compete with distinction at major international championships.
Other sportspeople who have received awards from SportsAid include Sir Steven Redgrave, Matthew Pinsent, Denise Lewis, Steve Backly and Dean Macey.
