Ospreys have been spotted in Devon this week much to bird lovers’ delight.

The Devon Birds website is an online resource where people report bird sightings to the platform as they come across them.

On September 20, one user logged a sighting of “two or three ospreys” in the Upper Dart Estuary area.

The bird spotter posted: “One juvenile, blue Darvic Ring number 5B7, was ringed in nest this year.”

RSPB describes this “spectacular fish-eating bird of prey” as being “an Amber List species because of its historical decline (due to illegal killing) and low breeding numbers”.

The large bird of prey receives special legal protection through The Wildlife and Countryside Act.

The Devon Birds society, where the sighting was logged, has “a long and distinguished history dating back to 1928”, their website explains, and the society “became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in 2021”.
