THE Gardening Club of Bere Ferrers Horticultural Society held its 103rd annual show recently in the local primary school.
Luxuriant exotics towered over the stands, the vibrant hibiscus and mandevila competing for attention against the paler pristine orchids and lilies.
The primary pupils had taken part enthusiastically, with some clever, amusing entries in the vegetable/fruit model class.
Increased entries in the fruit section made an attractive display.
Overall, exhibits were slightly down on last year, probably due to the cold winter and late spring, but the judges returned a verdict of high standards.
Some changes to the schedule had resulted in increased interest — the handicraft section was well supported, in particular the cards, and visitors commented on the almost professional standard of the photography.
Entries in the decorative section were colourful and stylish and of an excellent standard, the 'Scottish Wedding Class' was particularly appropriate as the royal wedding of Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall was taking place in Edinburgh at the same time.
Villagers and visitors alike had much to admire and comment on; with a plant sale, home made refreshments and a raffle, the whole event was judged a success.
John Snell, local author and historian presented the trophies to the class winners.
