FREE parking, regular mini-buses and car boot sales are among a range of ideas to try and boost business in Tavistock.
A meeting will be held next week to discuss the many suggestions after the recently-formed Tavistock Action Group got the ball rolling earlier this month.
Eddie Carruthers of TAG said: 'West Devon Borough Council has been on to us to see if it can give us any help in promoting the town, just to try and get some trade back, which is what we all want.'
Mr Carruthers said he has asked if it would be possible to have free car parking on certain days during the run-up to Christmas to boost business in Tavistock — particularly in light of recent car parking increases.
'The cost of short-stay car parking really doesn't encourage shoppers to stay,' he said.
'I also think it would be a good idea to have a mini-bus starting off at Bedford Square and touring around all the estates, doing perhaps an hourly service,' Mr Carruthers said.
He said more use could be made of the square to encourage people into town. Entertainments from veteran motorbike displays to jugglers and Punch and Judy or even car boot sales could entertain visitors and shoppers.
'People say it's dead in Tavistock on a Sunday. Some people may not like boot fairs but it would get people flocking in — it really has to have things happening on it,' he said.
David Incoll, chief executive of the borough council, confirmed officers had been liaising with TAG.
He said: 'We are very keen to see European Objective 2 funding provide a pot for town centre enhancement and promotion which would help organisations like Tavistock Action Group.'
Ken Sanders, chairman of the town council's properties committee, was optimistic there would soon be far more use made of Bedford Square.
'There are groups coming to us now saying "Can we use the square please?" It will happen,' he said.
'The town council is doing the management and booking of the square, so if anyone wants to use it they should get on to the town council offices,' said Mr Sanders.
The TAG meeting will take place at the Royal British Legion Club in Tavistock on Tuesday, December 7, at 7.30pm.
Anyone with ideas on boosting business in Tavistock is welcome to attend.
