THE art of embroidery will be highlighted at an exhibition at a Dartmoor castle beginning next week. The Cheriton Bishop Group of West Country Embroiderers has members from South Zeal, Sticklepath, Drewsteignton and further afield from Exmouth to Petrockstowe plus the Crediton and Crockernwell areas. The exhibition will be at Castle Drogo from September 26 to October 10 during usual castle opening hours. Returning by invitation to the castle, group members will be demonstrating stumpwork, goldwork, crewel, padded figures, Devon creamwork and a host of embroidery and ancillary skills. Among them will be Christine Benjamin, working on her latest wall hanging and providing visitors with a close-up view of an unusual method of work in progress. The opportunities for visitors to gain a close up view of embroidery techniques and the precision of the needlework skills required to produce exquisite works is sure to make the event popular. Members of the group meet in Cheriton Bishop Village Hall once a month for a friendly skill-sharing session, where they are joined by a variety of tutors. The group is always pleased to welcome new members to its meetings, on the first Tuesday of every month starting at 1.45pm. Further information can be obtained by calling 01837 840547.
