Whitchurch Primary School’s flag is about to get a lot cooler!

The school’s flag is about to embark on a voyage to Antarctica aboard the Royal Navy’s icebreaker, HMS Protector.

Pictured are Year 4 pupils at Whitchurch Primary School with HMS Protector’s Commanding Officer, Captain Matt Syrett RN. The children have just started their Antarctic project and Captain Syrett will take their flag to the Antarctic aboard his ship.

Capt Syrett, who has links with the school, talked with Year 4 about his recent travels and experiences in the Antarctic.

Class teacher Jo Whitney said the children were looking forward to communicating via email and WhatsApp with Captain Syrett during his time in Antarctica.

She said: ‘This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn directly from the experiences of someone travelling and working in this region. The link ties in with the children’s topic for the spring term when they will be learning about Ernest Shackleton’s expedition to the Antarctic.’
