TAVISTOCK Primary School had a cash boost to its fundraising for new computer equipment following a donation from the Rotary Club of Tavistock recently.
The rotary club donated £250 towards the school’s computer fund at the school’s annual fair. The cheque was presented by the club’s youth opportunities leader Trevor Williams, who said he was pleased to kick off the new Rotary year by supporting the community in this way.
Headteacher Lynnette Selbie said the school had 415 pupils aged between two and 11, where eight different languages were spoken. The computers could help pupils to learn faster by translating foreign words into English and the aim was to get all the classrooms equipped with at least one Learnpad between two. She said these didn’t replace traditional methods like blackboards and textbooks but helped to enhance teaching.
The fair is organised by the Home School Association, run by the parents as their major fundraising event of the year and aims to raise in excess of £2,000 towards the purchase of Learnpads, which are the educational version of the iPad.
