TAVISTOCK Community Primary School is celebrating a £1.3-million investment for new Foundation Stage facilities.

Devon County Council is providing the significant sum of money to construct a state-of-the-art building to replace the former nursery building.

The new building will be larger than the current temporary huts, providing four new classrooms and a shared curriculum space, which aims to enable a fully integrated Foundation Stage facility, with large double doors to give free-flow access for outside learning for all children.

A spokesperson for the governors of the primary school said they were delighted.

‘We are delighted that Devon County Council has agreed to replace our very old “temporary” nursery building, which is believed to be over 40 years old,’ they said.

‘The council has agreed an impressive investment of £1.3-million to provide us with the latest, state-of-the-art Foundation Stage facilities.

‘This demonstrates true acknowledgement and belief from Devon County Council in the quality and expert level of early years provision which our experienced staff provide.’

Headteacher of the primary school Lynnette Selbie said: ‘This new, purposely designed building will help to strengthen and enhance the already excellent teaching and learning for our youngest children.

‘The school is very excited about this project and delighted to receive such a large investment from Devon County Council.’

The old building will be demolished in January 2019 and the project is planned to be finished ready for the start of the new academic year in September.

Devon County Council’s cabinet member for schools Cllr James McInnes said: ‘I’m delighted that we have been able to provide these state-of-the-art facilities for our youngest learners.

‘Together with good teaching, these new facilities will enable them to have the best possible start to their school careers.’
