RECENTLY a Fairtrade schools’ conference was held at Okehampton College where students were able to meet a farmer from Ghana who produces Fairtrade chocolate.

Year 7 students attended and pupils from some of the feeder primary schools. The youngsters were able to meet Isaac Baidoo, a farmer from Ghana who produces Fairtrade chocolate which is marketed by Divine.

Isaac told the audience how beneficial it was to be a Fairtrade cocoa producer, not only for his family but for his community too.

There were enjoyable activities including chocolate tasting — which proved very popular with students.

The Fairtrade Group is grateful to the college for hosting this event.

The second Fairtrade event in the town was held on March 11 at at All Saints Church Hall.

The event showcased the work of some of Okehampton’s small businesses. Stalls included jams and preserves, wooden goods, children’s clothes, greetings cards, organic fruit and veg.

Also represented were Traidcraft and Just Living. Okehampton’s Co-op had a stall displaying the range of Fairtrade goods available in Co-op stores.

Kate Thompson, one of the organisers, said: ‘There was a great atmosphere throughout the event thanks to the team of good-humoured helpers who worked tirelessly providing excellent refreshments, running the raffle etc and to Brian Higbee who sang and played guitar thereby enhancing everyone’s enjoyment.

‘We are grateful to the mayor, Jan Goffey, for making time to come to the coffee morning and for her support for Fairtrade over the years.’
