PUPILS at Okehampton Primary School used their artistic skills to draw illustrations for a new book last Friday.
A series of special workshops at the school is giving some of the talented children the chance to draw some of Dartmoor’s animals and have them printed in a guide book of fun walks all around the moor.
The book is a joint project between a local wildlife educator Matt Parkins and Visit Dartmoor, the tourism partnership for the Dartmoor area. It will contain a set of interesting short walks aimed at families from Devon or those visiting on holiday.
They will take walkers to a range of wildlife hotspots and the children’s drawings will help to tell the stories of where the animals live.
The routes will pass through upland woodlands, over some rocky tors and along spectacular river valleys to allow people the chance to experience the life of wild moorland creatures.
Art teacher Miss Luna Burrell said: ‘Some of the school’s best artists are enjoying this project as it’s a one off chance to take part in an exciting project like this.’
The children are spending time drawing butterflies, birds, insects or mammals and hope to see the illustrated book before the start of the summer.
They will also have the chance to win a copy of the book and see their names in print before they set off on a walk to learn about the lives of local wildlife.
