STUDENTS and staff at Callington Community College are celebrating a fantastic set of GCSE results this year.

Sixty four percent of students achieved five A* to C grades, including English and maths, with 75% achieving A* to C in maths and 72% in English.

There have been many outstanding performances from the students. Erin Hilsdon achieved 12 A* grades; Sarah Gruitt achieved 10 A* grades and two A grades and Katie Neal achieved nine A*grades, one distinction* grade and two A grades. Also celebrating a set of superb results are Charlotte Neal who achieved eight A* grades, one distinction* grade, two A grades and one B grade; Ellie Petherick-Davies who achieved six A*grades and six A grades and Ryan Langman who achieved six A* grades, two A grades and three B grades.

Amy Griffin achieved five A* grades, six A grades and one B grade and Sam Lane achieved five A* and six A grades. Sarah Gruitt, Erin Hilsdon, Sam Lane and Ellie Petherick-Davies also did well to achieve a coveted A* with distinction in their additional mathematics qualification. There were many other students who were celebrating achieving the highest grades, with 52% of the year group achieving at least one A or A* grade among their results.

Acting principal Kathy Hocking said: ‘I am absolutely delighted by the achievements of all our students. While it is fantastic to hear about the exceptional academic achievement of our most able students, students from across the ability range have achieved grades that they are rightly proud of. All of the Year 11 students should be congratulated for their achievements.

‘The college is delighted that the hard work, dedication and commitment of students and staff alike has been justly rewarded with such fine results. We look forward to welcoming many students back into the sixth form to continue their studies and wish all the students every success and happiness for the future as they embark on the next phase of their learning.’

Cornwall Council congratulated all the students in the county on their GCSE results. This year sees a change to the headline measures that the Government will report, focusing on its Progress 8 and Attainment 8 targets, as well as the percentage of students achieving grades A* to C in maths and English. Early indications suggested that students in Cornwall performed well against the national picture for these measures.

Andrew Wallis, Cornwall Council cabinet member for children and young people, said: ‘I would like to congratulate all the students for their hard work and achievements in this year’s GCSE exams. It is not only students who deserve praise, but all teachers, staff and governors of the schools who should also have our thanks for helping these students reach their potential. And of course parents and carers play an important role too with help and support. It’s a real team effort.’
