?GREAT? ? that was the verdict at the end of The Big Draw event held in Tavistock?s Bedford Square last Saturday. Organised by West Devon artist Jennie Hale with support from an Awards for All Lottery grant, sponsorship from local businesses and help from West Devon Borough Council, people flocked to the event to try their hand at drawing and painting. Held in ?The Workshop Under the Sky? yurt, a kind of tent, those who took part were able to draw tools loaned by Tavistock Museum and life models, thanks to volunteers from Dartmoor Rescue Group and the police. A steamroller from the Robey Trust was also present in the square during the day. Julia Vella, West Devon Borough Council?s arts officer, said: ?It went really well. There was lots of interest from the public ? they all really got stuck in. ?We had eight local artists there to help, giving them tips and encouraging them ? we had grandparents come with their grandchildren, whole families ? some children stayed for hours.? Julia said she hoped some of those who took part will be encouraged to try more painting and drawing as a result of the experience. A selection of the drawings and paintings can be seen in Tavistock Museum and at the borough council offices at Kilworthy Park.
