AN important access link to the Drake's Trail in West Devon will finally be made this month, following a land purchase.
Residents in the Grenofen area have been frustrated by the fact they can only join the popular walking and cycling trail from Anderton Lane — despite the track passing within metres of their homes.
But now, after a long period of negotiation, Devon County Council has bought the land required to create access to the trail from the Halfway House pub car park, and a new path and boundary fence is expected to be built within the next few weeks.
Initially the path will have a temporary surface — a hardened surface will be laid once planning consent has been amended.
Grenofen resident Bob Jones, who has been campaigning for the new link to be constructed, said: 'It has been a long time coming but I am delighted by the news we will soon have access to Drake's Trail.
'It was frustrating having the old railway track so close and not being able to use it. It really is a great asset and not just for recreation.
'It means cyclists and walkers will be able to get to Yelverton and Tavistock without having to use a busy road, so there is a safety benefit as well. I feel sure it will prove popular with a lot of people in West Devon.
'I for one will be leaving the car at home a lot more in future.'
Clive Pattison, landlord of the Halfway House, said: 'It's fantastic news for the residents of Grenofen. We've been waiting a long time so it's good news it's finally happening.'
County councillor Philip Sanders said: 'I am absolutely delighted that we've finally managed to complete this very important link. Unfortunately, it has taken a long time but it's worth waiting for. It's going to be a very useful link from the trail to Grenofen and the surrounding area and I am sure it will be well used and well liked by the local population.'
