A speed watch in a Dartmoor village is looking for more volunteers to monitor drivers’ speeds through the village.

The appeal comes as police agree also conduct occasional speed monitoring in Dousland, where villagers live with traffic passing through to reach Burrator Reservoir and other Dartmoor beauty spots.

A speed watch spokesperson said: “Dousland is unlike many roads people simply pass through. Much of the village has no pavements, there are homes with direct access onto the road, a busy pub, walkers, cyclists and horse riders, and it is one of the main routes between Plymouth, Burrator and Dartmoor. During busy periods, hundreds of vehicles pass through the village in a relatively short time.

“Our aim is not to catch people out or issue penalties. We simply want everyone to recognise that a few extra seconds on their journey are worth far less than the safety of those who live, work and visit here. We've asked for occasional police speed enforcement to support the work of our volunteers and reinforce the importance of the 30mph limit.

“We hope this will help encourage safer driving throughout the village, not just when community speed watch is visible.
