CHARITABLE status has been awarded to the Tamar Valley Donkey Park at St Ann's Chapel to protect the future of the donkeys and other animals.
The park, which is home to 29 donkeys plus ponies, goats, sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs and pigs, says the new status will make quite an impact on the attraction.
Charitable status secures the future of the animals, many of whom are rescued, particularly the donkeys who can live up to 50 years — the youngest at the park is just four years old. It also ensures that future rescue animals can be welcomed into the park.
David Gibbons and his family have owned the park for more than ten years: 'The funds will be channelled in to the basic upkeep of the donkeys and other animals in much the same way as it always has, however, now we can accept donations and legacies in particular, something that I know we have missed out on in the past,' said Mr Gibbons.
'Our aim at the park is not just to provide care, but also to raise awareness of the welfare of our animals — most of our residents are here because of neglect, sickness, maltreatment and homelessness.'
In order to win charitable status, public benefit had to be proved. The sanctuary provides volunteer placement for adults with special needs, the donkeys often visit local schools and events, and animal care students from local colleges are invited to use the park for work experience.
