A WHOPPING £2,600 was poured into Tavistock Rotary Club's collection tins during its festive street collections last month. The club's Santamobile brought Father Christmas to homes in Tavistock to raise money for the Shelterbox Appeal and local causes. Rotary Club president Tony Whitehead said: 'I am absolutely amazed by this show of generosity. 'As a trader in the town I know very well that people have had to tighten their belts this year because of the economic conditions, but still they have dug deep into their pockets for charity. 'Our Bedford Square collection on Dickensian evening raised just over £700 and this was sent to the Shelterbox Appeal to help survivors of the cyclone in Bangladesh. 'The rest will be spent on local causes and our annual dinner for senior citizens, which is currently in the planning stage, will take a fair portion of this money.' The club is currently trying to find a garage to store the small vehicle and rigging which turns into the Santamobile, along with donated books and bric-a- brac needed to stage its activities. Mr Whitehead appeals to anyone with an empty space which the club could use to get in contact. Anyone who can help, should contact Mr Whitehead on 01822 613665.
