THE opening day of the show kicked off in style on the opening day for Deborah Custance-Baker and her husband Jonathan, with their Large Blacks pigs claiming a number of medals.

Deborah, who is the pig section secretary for the Okehampton Show, had the champion male in the senior and junior boar categories, with two of her sows finishing third and fourth in their category.

Deborah said: 'The Large Black is a great breed, distinguished by its big floppy ears and black hair. It's a great show pig, as the lop ears mean it can't see, so they are not so fast moving.

'One of our sows is only a little one and much younger than the others. The others all did brilliantly. It's just great to compete, which I obviously can't do at the Okehampton Show.'

Deborah and Jonathan's exciting weekend did not end there – on Friday, they helped to escort Adam Henson from BBC's Countryfile around the show.

She said: 'I'm looking forward to it. He will be looking around the animals at the show, so it will be a nice day.'
