SOUTH ZEAL recently lost one of its most popular residents, following the death of James Cooper, stonemason and stalwart of the Dartmoor Folk Festival. Jim lived in South Zeal all his life and started out as a farm worker. After marrying Girlie at South Tawton Church in 1949, when they were both 20, Jim started on a new career as a stonemason, picking up the skill from his father-in-law. Jim had a lifelong interest in music, folk music and traditional dances. He was closely associated with Dartmoor Folk Festival from its inception and the support he gave to it over the years helped ensure the event?s continued success. The garden of Jim and Girlie?s home caught the imagination of many visitors to the village ? it became a miniature wonderland filled with mini tableaux, set scenes, gnomes, pixies and creatures of all kinds, as well as raising money for charity. Donations given by those in the packed church at his recent funeral service were for Devon Air Ambulance and Girlie and her family extended thanks to everyone. They also offered heartfelt thanks to neighbour Barry Dillion who tried to resuscitate Jim before the ambulance arrived. The family appreciate also the kindness of the Rev Michael Thayer and neighbours and friends Keith Redstone and family. Jim and Girlie had six children.
