FOLLOWING the success of the 'Dousland Olympics Fun Day' held in August last year, a Dousland Community Committee has been set up and plans to hold an annual Dousland Fun Day in August are in the pipeline.

The new committee see the event as a way of bringing the local community together and, at the same time, raising funds for the community. This year, funds raised on Saturday, August 3 will be going to Derriford's Children Cancer Unit and local community causes.

A spokesperson for the committee said: 'As we do not have a village hall,  we meet at The Burrator Inn where we have held a few social events already to raise funds through raffles and auctions, with all prizes being donated by local business people and members of the community.

'Everyone has been very generous in their contributions which is fantastic and very much appreciated.'

The committee held a small wine and cheese party in June as a thank-you to contributors and on this evening, the first Dousland Princess, Shannon Fisher, was chosen, who will open the Dousland Fun Day at noon on August 3.

On the day there will be a display by the Tamar Valley Westerners, team games with a school sports day theme, a variety of stalls and refreshment tents, including a hog roast, beer and Pimms tent.

There will be a children's cowboys and indians fancy dress competition, with the winner receiving a family ticket for Paignton Zoo. As a grand finale, there will be a wellie throwing competition — for a £1 entry fee, anyone can have a go, and there will be a £10 prize for the overall winner.

There will also be a prize draw on the £1 per entry fee — first prize is a family ticket for Paignton Zoo.
