South Devon League Premier Chagford 3 East Allington 2 THANKS to sterling work by staff led by Ralph, Chagford were able to stage this match and gain a valuable three points in their pursuit of divisional leaders Bovey Tracey. Although, for much of the time, Chagford wondered if their efforts were worth it with the visitors having the upper hand for much of the game. The home side were handed a dream start though when Andrew Davis was fed a superb through ball by Robin Crowther-Smith and coolly slotted the ball home on three minutes. From there, the hosts almost conspired to bring about their own downfall with desperate tackles and bickering at the officials. In the absence of injured club captain, Mark Williams, Chagford were able to draft in James Williams who had a storming game in the heart of defence. Even so, as the weather, and play, started to deteriorate, East Allington took control and eased back into the game with a poorly defended goal. Debutee, Saul Scarry, could only watch as his defenders were out battled in allowing the turn around. Christian Crowther-Smith somehow clipped a great cross over the visitors' bar from less than six yards, Davis lost out on a one-to-one with the 'keeper and a bad day at the office seemed on the cards for the Chagford side. It took 20 minutes of second half endeavour for Chagford to get themselves on level terms. Eaun Stone, who had worked tirelessly as a lone striker, held up the ball and then sent Christian Crowther-Smith through to score past a stranded 'keeper. This after East Allington stole the lead and Mortimore had replaced the injured Botham, in bolstering the defence. Whatley soon replaced Stone to add fresh legs going forward and the tide gradually turned. The energy sapping mud played a fair part in Chagford's third goal as Crowther-Smith's close in shot dribbled free to Davis who struck home a very late winner. The relief was almost tangible as the teams left the field but Chagford know they must raise their standards of play and self-discipline, if they are to continue to challenge at the top of this hard division. l This week the Chagford Firsts travel to Ipplepen and the reserves entertain Loddiswell Reserves. Both games kick-off at 2.30pm.
