TAMAR and Tavy Gig Club began the 2005 regatta circuit at Dartmouth with five teams competing. For the first time The club fielded a supervets crew (for those well within the forty years plus bracket). Conditions were excellent with light winds and a gentle sea. The club, only at the beginning of its second season, produced some creditable mid-field results against stiff competition in close run races. Ground was gained around the marks by nifty coxing and solid effort on the home straights. The ladies took 7th place in the A team race in 15 mins 57 and 8th place in the B team races in 16 mins 57 battling out the last few inches against the home team gig ?Lightening?. The men?s A team completed the course in 14 mins 16 taking 10th place despite stroke David Dawe breaking a hard wood pin, the equivalent of a wooden rowlock, at the first mark. The men also made excellent time in their B team event snatching 9th place in 15 mins 1 sec. The squads have been training hard at home on the River Tamar and gaining sea experience with Rame gig club in preparation for the Isles of Scilly World Pilot Gig Championships at the end of April. The club promises some surprises from the newcomers in Ginette.
