A PROMINENT eucalyptus tree which overhangs Dolvin Road in Tavistock will be felled in early February because it is diseased and in danger of falling down.

Tavistock town council employees will be removing the 30-year-old tree from Dolvin Road Cemetery a year after the other large eucalyptus tree was felled due to severe frost damage.

Land manager for the town council James Clapp said: 'It has a fungus that effectively attacks the root system. There is no danger of it falling down at the moment but it will have to be felled at some stage so we have decided to do it sooner rather than later due to its proximity to houses.

'We will plant another two trees further away from the road in the cemetery in the spring or autumn to replace the eucalyptus.'
