A DANCE craze in Tavistock has sparked the idea for a dance day at next year's music and arts festival.
With 12 dance groups currently operating in Tavistock and district it was felt that dance should be included in the popular event for the first time.
West Devon arts officer Julia Vella said: 'There is so much that goes on, from the more traditional dancing like folk, to jive and salsa, which has become more popular because of TV shows like Strictly Come Dancing.
'It would be nice if we could bring all the groups together so they could experience different types of dance.'
The idea is in its early stages but it is hoped that the dance day could coincide with World Dance Day on April 29, 2009, which falls in the middle of the arts festival week, with taster sessions, open classes and displays around the town.
'We hope to get Dance in Devon, the dance agency for the whole of Devon, involved, and would like to work with professional dancers as well as amateur dancers,' said the arts officer.
'I would like to hear from any dance organisations who would like to feature in the festival.'
There is also a plan to bring back children's maypole dancing in Bedford Square as part of the artists' market during the festival week.
Tavistock and its surrounding areas offer three Scottish dance groups, three line dance groups, belly dancing, folk dancing, attik dance for the over 45s, ballet, tap and modern dance, salsa, jive, morris and a new group called razmika dance.
