PEOPLE with Parkinson's in Tavistock can now benefit from exercise classes thanks to one man's fundraising mission.
Tavistock's Parkinsons UK support Group has really benefited from funds raised by Dr Darren Evans when he cycled from John O'Groats to Lands End earlier this year.
Some of the money raised is being used to subsidise exercise classes specifically for people with Parkinson's. These are held at the Anchorage Centre twice a month, on the last Monday of every month between 2.45pm and 4.45pm — excluding December — and the second Thursday each month between 10.30am and noon.
Nicola Thompson, an HPC registered physiotherapist who is fully experienced in the particular needs of Parkinson's patients, runs these classes.
The group has also enjoyed some day trips thanks to Darren's efforts.
Darren, who was born and brought up in Tavistock but now lives in Switzerland, managed to raise more than £2,000 for the group by cycling the 904 miles in six days, seven hours and fourteen minutes.
Darren's parents still live in Tavistock — his father Dave has battled with Parkinson's for many years and his mother Val helps run Tavistock's Parkinson's UK group.
Val said: 'If you have Parkinson's, or you care for someone with Parkinson's, why not join us? New members are always welcome, there is no need to book just come to one of our exercise classes or group meetings.'
The group meetings are also held at the Anchorage Centre on the last Tuesday of every month between 10.30am and noon.
