Throgmorton League Cup

Tavistock AFC 0

Plymouth Parkway 0

(After extra time Tavistock won 5-4 on penalties).

THIS quarter final last week, although goalless, provided one of the best games seen at Langsford Park for a long, long time. It was great entertainment for both sets of supporters, with both teams playing at their best.

Chances were created by both teams and it was evident that possibly one goal would decide the outcome. After 120 minutes of quality football action the score line remained blank.

The game was decided when captain Will Stringer showed nerves of steel, as he netted what was to be the final spot kick, after former Tavistock player John Morris saw his spot kick crash against the cross bar.

It was evident that both teams were set on getting through to the semi-final, the game was not for the faint hearted, with stern challenges from both sides. This made it a cracking encounter with the two hours seeming to pass in a flash. Both sides created chances, but it was the Lambs creating more than the visitors. Parkway's potent strike force, were contained by a great display by the home defence, and safe handling by goal keeper Andy Meeds.

The Lambs were once again guilty of not converting some good chances to score with Hobbs, Conday and Carter all going close. Parkway's keeper Ben Elphick was rewarded for his bravery, he denied both Hobbs and Carter by going down on the ball at their feet, in 50-50 challenges, when they were through on goal.

The home sides midfield were in great form and slightly edged the battle in the middle third, with Krac, Hallett, and Blatchford all turning in fine displays.

However the best chance of the match fell to Parkways Andy Sargent in the second period of extra time, when he slice his shot wide of the target from six yards out, with only Meeds to beat.

After all the excitement of the 120 minutes, came the drama of the penalty shoot out. The Lambs scored five superb penalties, with Elphick unable to get a hand near any of them. Parkways John Morris saw his shot hit the cross bar to give Tavistock the victory. This was a great contest.

It was great to see the Lambs back to their best, with a very good all round team performance. They must now maintain this level of performance to the end of the season, if they do, then they could well be in the mix for honours. These teams have yet to play each other in the league, if these games are as good as this one, then spectators are in for a real treat.

The Lambs now progress to the semi -finals, which will be played on a neutral ground on March 29.

Last Saturday's league home fixture against Bovey Tracey was postponed due to a water logged pitch after heavy rain on Friday night and Saturday morning.
