HUNDREDS of people packed into Tavistock last Friday to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the town?s annual Dickensian Evening.

The smell of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine filled the chilly December air as visitors took advantage of a wealth of festive entertainment.

Traders dressed up in period costume and welcomed late night shoppers with mince pies and wine, while the colourful Christmas lights illuminated the streets.

The evening began with the opening walk by the mayors of Tavistock and West Devon, escorted by town crier, Bob Rose. Shortly afterwards a crowd gathered around Bedford Square for a performance by the Tavistock Churches Music Group.

Meanwhile, outside the Old Folks? Rest Room, musical entertainment was provided by the Stannary Brass Band and the Tamar Valley Ladies Barbershop Choir.

Throughout the evening, crowds were treated to impromptu displays by Plymouth Mayflower Chorus, Morris dancers the Wreckers, and various buskers.

And the celebrations concluded with a rousing carol service led by the parish church choir and the Stannary band.

In a letter to the Times, Philip Hartnoll, chairman of the chamber of commerce, wrote: ?On behalf of the Tavistock and District Chamber of Commerce, I would like to thank all who participated so enthusiastically in this year?s Dickensian Evening.

?The effort of many shops in displays and dress was impressive, the variety and quality of entertainment was exceptional, and the town was busy from one end to the other.

?Our appreciation goes to the efforts of all.

?I would ask Sarah Bunting, age 8, to contact us. For two years she has caught the eye of the West Devon mayors for her costume. We would like to acknowledge her.?
