CRAIG DAVID once again proved he was the comeback king by delivering a sizzling performance of his latest and greatest hits at the Plymouth Pavilions last night.
It’s been six years since he last went on tour — but the R&B star demonstrated he hadn’t missed a step by delighting fans with a sensational arena show which was nothing short of epic.
Performing tracks from his sixth studio album ‘Following My Intuition’ interspersed with hits from his extensive back-catalogue of garage mixes, the Southampton-born singer could not have looked happier as he returned to his decks for a DJ set during the show.
Throughout the performance Craig’s vocals were as smooth and interchangeable as ever, from his high pitch soft notes to his grunge lyric spitting.
The 12-time Brit nominee donned an entirely white outfit and was joined by a five-piece band and two backing singers. He entered the pavilion to the most rapturous of welcomes as he performed ‘Aint Giving Up’ from his new album.
This was seamlessly followed by the classic 2002 track ‘What’s Your Flava’ and the millennium smash hit ‘Fill Me In’ — which, unsurprisingly, prompted a sing-along from a capacity crowd.
Thrilled by the euphoric welcome the humble 35-year-old recalled being 18 and performing short DJ sets in small night clubs, he thanked his fans for their support throughout his music career.
The singer-songwritter counted his performance with ’Louder than Words’, which he said was one of his favourites from the latest album. He then performed ‘Walking Away’, a song he wrote at 16-years-old while living in his mum’s flat.
Craig spoke of his father’s strong influence on him growing up listening to his reggae records, which had evidently filtered into some of the songs on the new album, including ’Warm It Up‘ — a dance track which was warmly welcomed by a packed pavilion.
The singer then performed ’Rise and Fall’ followed by his 2016 record ’Nothing Like This’ — an irresistible garage beat, which had an enthusiastic crowd on their feet.
A rendition of Justin Bieber’s ’Love Yourself’, made famous in his BBC Radio One Live Lounge performance in 2015, also proved popular with the audience.
A particular stand out moment was when thousands of phone cameras lit up the pavilion as the singer-songwritter performed popular noughties hit ‘Seven Days’, arguably one of his most renowned records.
Craig and the band then departed from the stage. He reappeared minutes later in a different outfit accompanied by a mixing deck.
Crowds were then transported to an atmosphere which emulated a typical night in one of Craig’s famous Miami clubs, with an amplified baseline and powerful strobe lighting.
Along with his track ’Rewind’ he played music from artists Destiny’s Child, Sean Paul, Drake and Stormzy.
Then the show came to an almighty end with a mash-up of his debut single ’Fill Me In’ and ‘Where Are U Now’ by Justin Bieber — a mix Craig has called ‘16’ on his new album.
This track concluded and summarised his performance perfectly. The music mega-star managed to simultaneously stimulate nostalgia yet remind audiences that he is still very much in the game.
