I UNDERSTAND that Mid Devon Primary Care Trust is shortly to remove the facility of an on duty doctor at Okehampton Hospital between the hours of 11pm and 8am. May I refer to the British Medical Association report of January 21 which states that country dwellers are losing out on health care that is readily available in towns. The decision by the Mid Devon PCT reinforces the position outlined by the BMA report. In addition to the loss of service for those living in the Okehampton area, surely this will also result in extra, and unnecessary, pressure being placed on the A and E departments at the RD and E, and Derriford hospitals? Is this not further evidence that the rural population of this country are being subjected to a second class health service whilst paying the same rates of income tax and just as high rates of council tax as those in urban areas? I cannot imagine that any patient liaison committee would sanction such a decision which begs the question, who did? The accountants no doubt (who probably live in town).
