HAVING read the item, 'Town centre campaign cash plea

is rejected', in last week's Times, I think some sort of

response is called for, especially in view of some of the

comments made by local councillors.

I must express my disappointment at the apparent

unwillingness of the town council to lend its support to

the huge number of businesses and residents, who for the

past few months have been campaigning to protect the

very heart of this amazing market town. The council might

have been expected to have spearheaded such a

campaign, not lagged miles behind.

I am also at something of a loss to understand the

comments made by some of our town councillors,

especially having been advised that it would be legally

possible to agree to the request for financial support.

And how could Cllr Mrs Govier say that 'the council could

not be seen to support (or not support) superstore

applications as the electors were split on the subject',

when it was only in April that the town council did

precisely that, when it decided not to support the

Sainsbury's application.  As a town councillor, and a

member of the borough council's planning committee,

surely Cllr Mrs Govier would have been aware of that?

But, hopefully, the council will now take up her

suggestions and give more money to Christmas lights.

And perhaps have the courage to change its mind, and

actively support and promote its award-winning town

centre.
