RE: DEVON County Council?s Parking Proposals. I am writing in response to your front-page article (June 1) on the above subject, and would like to express my comments and observations pertaining to these proposals. In recent years there have been many small amendments to the traffic management by Devon County Council in and around Tavistock, which has led to other traffic problems in and around the town, and little thought was given to what effect they would have on residents in other areas, even when public submissions have been made to those proposals, Devon County officers have replied we have no money to make any alterations. In other instances West Devon Borough Council has, in its management of Tavistock Town Council car parks, been putting up the charges (which are now far greater than Plymouth for long term parking) to such an extent that we have had a proliferation of all-day parking by drivers from outside the town in residential areas. Note: in the last 12 months this has increased by over 150%. In this town, there is a considerable number of properties which do not have any parking facilities whatsoever, and over the past few years some properties have been constructed without the provision of two parking spaces per property, this is contrary to stated county and borough planning policies as stated in published local plans, when granting planning proposals. I can therefore only suggest that parking is made free within the town car parks, or otherwise a formal request is made to the Inland Revenue and Customs that the free car parking given to the officers of Devon County Council and West Devon Borough Council be classified as a perk, thus liable for personal taxation as stated within the tax regulations calculated at the full parking daily rate. I look forward to seeing a response from Devon County Council and West Devon Borough Council on this matter in your next edition. Charles Douglas John Mathis Corfe Maudlins Park Tavistock
