A SECOND public meeting will be held in Gunnislake today (Thursday) over controversial plans to shut the A390 for water main repair work. The meeting, more formal than the first, takes place in Gunnislake Public Hall and Social Club in Fore Street from 7pm to 9pm and residents will be given an opportunity to raise questions following a presentation by South West Water. SWW communications officer Louise Bennett said the meeting would clarify a lot of the questions and points raised at the first meeting two weeks ago. Cornwall County Council is closing a stretch of the A390 which leads to New Bridge, a main crossing between Cornwall and Devon, for the work, and full diversion routes will be in operation, details of which will be given at the meeting. County councillor for Gunnislake Godfrey Smale said the road closure was going to ?cause chaos? because there were thousands of people using the A390 every day. ?This is a controversial move and I believe the county council highways officers should have done anything to stop that road being closed. Surely, the bridge could have been worked by lights.? Louise Bennett said the work involved digging right across the road and there was no way cars would get through. She said maps and plans at the meeting would help people to understand what was being done.
