DAVID Walter, the man recently chosen by West Devon and Torridge Liberal Democrats to succeed John Burnett as their prospective parliamentary candidate when the MP stands down at the next general election, spent the day on a fact finding mission at a Halwill nursing home last week.

The day at Halwill Manor was the first of several visits Mr Walter intends to take in the constituency, seeing at first hand the problems faced by people in key occupations. During his visit he helped wash and dress residents and served them lunch.

Mr Walter said: ?I was enormously impressed by the dedication and professionalism of the staff at Halwill Manor. This is what all nursing and residential homes should be ? a home where everybody is treated as an individual, rather than an institution.

?Caring for older people is much more than another job ? it is a real vocation.?
