ASPIRING models from West Devon are being sought to take part in a national style and beauty competition in Tavistock. The Essence Style and Beauty Awards is a new touring event which blends the style of a fashion show with the excitement of a beauty pageant, along with an evening of high energy live entertainment. Contestants will be selected for the final on Sunday, September 14 where they will be judged, not just on their beauty but also on their own individual style, elegance and character. At the show all contestants will get professional hair and make-up styling, will have time with a choreographer then will get to strut, pose and flaunt in front of family and friends at Tavistock Town Hall. The Essence show has been organised by former Tavistock College student Ben Neil. Ben, 28, grew up in Tavistock but moved away to go to university. Afterwards, he went on to do a series of jobs, including events organiser, magazine editor, and webmaster for an industry leading website. Now back in Tavistock, Ben decided to launch a company called the UK Hotlist, which is an online community for British modelling: 'I am a former professional events organiser, which is something I really enjoyed. I wanted to bring that element into my new project. Having been invited to several Miss England regional heats I thought I would like to have a go at organising a similar event myself. So I decided to put on a show which would be something that would really stand out in Tavistock and would be a great evening of entertainment for everyone. 'What we are trying to achieve is a shake-up of the traditional American stye beauty pageant to create something that is much more classy, fresh and edgy.' Many businesses have lent support to the show. These include Jack Chams, Number 13, Siren Lingerie, Maximillian Hair, Randell Cox, First Glance and Tavistock Rugby Club. Selection for the competition is open to women over 18 of all heights and sizes. The closing date for the Essence selection is Friday, August 1.
