WORK to convert the former Harrowbeer airfield at Yelverton into a community park got underway last week.

Two teams of New Deal Trainees, working under experienced supervisors from the Groundwork Trust, have been erecting the perimeter fence, laying pathways and safety surfacing.

A team of local volunteers has installed the land drains and cleared the site of stones ready for the new topsoil and seed.

Park committee chairman Chris Taylor said when it was completed the site, next to the Leg o' Mutton car park, would provide facilities for the entire community, including seating surrounded by mature trees, a children's play park, a five-a-side football pitch, plus picnic and wildlife areas.

The idea has been two years in gestation and organisers have raised £25,000 from a number of supporting organisations and local fundraising activities. Last weekend a sponsored walk was held to help raise a further £5,000.

There is also an opportunity for organisations or individuals to sponsor one of the hardwood park benches and put their message on a brass plaque.

The park is expected to open on schedule towards the end of July.
