THE summer festival, with this year?s theme; ?The First and Second World War?, to celebrate, and indeed, honour, the 85th anniversary of the North Tawton branch of the Royal British Legion ? was a resounding success. During the eight-day programme of events, a two-day local history exhibition held in the town hall attracted more than 200 visitors. The exhibition of old photographs and documents, and personal memorabilia, was put together by local historians Mrs Jean Shields and David Hoare, both of whom wrote the splendid North Tawton book, which was published in 2002, in co-operation with Alison Baker. ST Peter?s Church Sunday Club Camp from Friday, July 6 to Sunday, 8 enjoyed some rare sunshine. While the raft race had to be cancelled due to the high level of water on the River Taw, the sunshine hastened a chariot race, which was thoroughly enjoyed, by entrants and spectators alike. Jane Simons presented the club annual prizes during a special service on Sunday, July 15 at St Peter?s Church. ANYONE with a favourite hymn is advised to get in quick for the Songs of Praise service at St Peter?s Church on Sunday, August 12 at 6.30pm, bearing in mind, that the church is notorious for having as many as 14 favourite hymns presented for consideration.
