A COMMANDO challenge held last month at Bickleigh Barracks raised almost £3,000 for West Devon-based children's charity CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids). Teams from across the South West gathered at 42 Commando Royal Marines' base on Sunday, April 27. The event, which was sponsored by South West law firm Foot Anstey Solicitors, saw teams take part in various challenges, including archery, laser rifle range shooting and many physical challenges from rowing to erecting a tent. The challenges the teams undertook were training exercises the Royal Marines complete every day. The winning team was from Atlantic Inertial Systems and were called 'Carlsberg don't do Commando Teams'. CHICKS is the chosen charity of 42 Commando's Sergeant's Mess, and the challenge was just one event they are supporting in order to raise funds for under-privileged children. Jenny Paton, corporate and events executive for CHICKS, said: 'It was a wonderful day and we would like to thank 42 Commando RM especially Sergeant Paul Wood, the unit PTI, who arranged all the challenges. 'We are planning to repeat this event again with 42 Commando next year, so please get in touch if you would like to reserve your team space.' CHICKS' next corporate event takes place at Elfordleigh Golf Club on Friday, May 23. Teams of four are invited to take part, at £40 per head, for the full 18-hole competition. Anyone who would like to take part in this event should contact Jenny on 07877 326585 or 01822 811020.
