TAVISKATE, the group which aims to provide a skate park for the youngsters of Tavistock, has its annual meeting next Tuesday, July 22.
The group has now raised enough money to go ahead with the first stage of the park?s construction.
This will entail laying a flat tarmac base on the site at Benson Meadows, and repositioning the existing ramp onto it.
The first phase will cost an estimated £15,000, of which £9,000 will come from Taviskate?s partners, Tavistock Town Council and West Devon Borough Council.
The organisation is now awaiting the outcome of grant applications from the Awards for All lottery fund and the Local Community Network Fund.
If successful, this money will go towards buying ramps and rails for the skate park, which will cover an area of 700 square metres.
Taviskate chairman Bob Pilbeam will stand down at the meeting, after four years in charge of the group?s work.
He urged young skaters and their parents to get involved with the Taviskate project and come to Tuesday?s meeting.
?If we want things to move more quickly more parents and young people will have to get involved, particularly those younger skaters and their parents who have taken the sport up more recently,? he said.
The meeting will be held at 7pm at the primary school.
