Okehampton Columbines 1
Teignmouth 0
THIS was another important league win for Okehampton although the scoreline should have been more convincing.
Okehampton always looked the more dangerous going forward, but in the first half did not create enough movement off the ball.
This changed dramatically in the second half. In the first few minutes, skilful hockey by Okehampton led to a well crafted goal set up by Beth Stephens for Vicky Taylor to score.
Greater movement up front gave Sue Stanbury more space which she used to good effect to set up a number of scoring chances.
The midfield of Jane Jones, Netty Collett and Alex Collins worked like Trojans and Okehampton maintained their superiority.
But the second goal was not forthcoming and Paula Gibbs in goal for Okehampton had to make an excellent save to prevent Teignmouth from scoring on the break.
Recent performances by the Columbines have been more cohesive, but they have a hard game this week away against Exeter Ladies.
l On Sunday, Columbines travelled to Tiverton for the annual Veterans' Tournament.
They played good attacking hockey in both games in their section.
Plymouth eventually went through to the semi-finals, but the Okehampton defence kept the Plymouth attack at bay and Okehampton created scoring chances. The game finished a goalless draw and Columbines needed to win in their next game against ECV Hornets.
A Liz McKay run down the right wing set up Jane Jones for a strike which Viv Weatherington deflected for a goal.
Hornets equalised soon after, but excellent play created space for Alex Collins, who hammered the ball home for Okehampton's second.
Liz McKay struck home Okehampton's third, but tired legs caused them to lose their lead and the game ended in another draw — not enough to put Okehampton into the semi-finals.
This was a good team performance and Okehampton played good, entertaining hockey.
