CALLINGTON Community Academy Trust was privileged to have a visit from Baroness Sue Campbell recently. The Baroness has been on the board of the Youth Sport Trust since the charity's inception in 1994. A former junior international pentathlete and netball player, she went on to represent her country as a player, a coach and a team manager. Baroness Campbell trained as a physical education teacher and has taught at the University of Manchester and lectured at Leicester and Loughborough Universities before joining the Youth Sport Trust. She was chief executive of the National Coaching Foundation (now Sportscoach UK) for eleven years. More recently, the baroness was awarded the lifetime achievement award at the 2012 Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year awards and was the chair of UK Sport where she presided over Team GB and Paralympics GB's largest medal haul in living memory 2012. Callington Community College has been recognised by the YST and Baroness Campbell for its excellence in collaborative developments through LINE (Learning in the Natural Environment), UNICEF Rights and Respecting School awards, the college's integrated services, PE and sport and strong partnership work with the public health sector. The baroness also praised the college for the development of Arena's continued sports offers to local primary schools and while on a tour of the college, the baroness enjoyed dancing with many of the Year 11s during their last social dance lesson. The college is in the early stages of developing project work on health and well being, and as a result of Baroness Campbell's visit to the college, a member of staff has been asked to attend YST headquarters to present to the head of health with the baroness. Anyone interested in developing the health of the college's students and staff should contact director of PE Kate Harrison for more details at [email protected]">[email protected] or 01579 383292.
